Spring is a great time to start gardening. Start now by prepping your beds for the spring planting of your plants and vegetables. With that in mind, think about attending the Gonzales Master Gardeners’ Spring Plant Sales! That’s right “Sales”! We are having two this spring.
Our first sale, Tomato/Vegetable Sale, will be on Saturday, March 6, 2021 where we will be selling only tomatoes, peppers, and other vegetables. The sale will take place at PACE (Plantatarium: A Center for Exploration). This is the GMG building at 623 N. Fair Street (between the Gonzales Elementary School and Bus Barn). The sale will be held inside from 8:30 am until 1:00 pm. Masks and social distancing will be required. The number of people in the building will be limited at any given time.

Mike O., our Vegetable Grow Team leader, promises some great varieties of tomatoes to include Celebrity, Early Girl, Big Boy Hybrid, Super Sweet 100 (cherry) and many more. Some of the heirlooms that will be for sale are Brandywine, Cherokee Purple and others. Heirloom tomatoes are more resistant to various plant diseases and insects. He has chosen varieties of vegetables that do well in our area. There will be peppers, squashes, eggplants and a few more to complete your vegetable garden. New this year will be seed starter kits for those who want to learn how to grow your own vegetables from seed. These will include seeds for a variety of vegetables, one Celebrity tomato and one pepper plant. Information about how to get started will be provided.
Many gardeners like to purchase their vegetable transplants early. The 4-inch transplants can be potted up to 1-gallon pots until ready to place in the ground. This way, you can get them acclimated to the outside temperatures and sunlight before placing in the prepared bed. Bring them in on days/nights or cover with frost cloth when temperatures are below 40. Plant them in the ground when temperatures warm up.

Our second sale will be our annual Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, April 17, 2021 on Texas Heroes Square in downtown Gonzales from 8:30 am until 1:00 pm. By having the spring plant sale a little later, we will be able to find more plants from our wholesale nurseries. By April, temperatures are warmer and the annual bedding plants and perennials are ready to go in the ground. Our grow teams have been very busy growing quite a few plants in our Greenhouse. We will be offering many perennial/adaptive native plants, annuals, herbs, tropical house plants and succulents. There will also be a few varieties of citrus trees, blackberries and blueberries available.
There will be a great Silent Auction, Children’s Activities and “Ask the Master Gardener” booth. Consider signing up for the next MG training class scheduled for the fall of 2021.
We will be accepting cash/checks/credit/debit cards this year. Come on out for a great time (rain or shine). If you want specific plants please contact Fran Saliger at fsaliger@gvec.net or call 830-203-0311. If we can find the plant at our wholesale nursery or grow it ourselves, we would be glad to accommodate your needs.
The proceeds from this fundraiser help support our mission of teaching the community and school children about gardening and horticulture. Gonzales Master Gardeners is a 501(c) (3) working under the direction of the Texas A & M AgriLife Extension.

Growing the plants for the sale is an enormous opportunity for our students and members to learn more about plants and plant propagation. We grow our plants both at home and at our greenhouse as well as purchasing from our wholesale nurseries. We offer a wide range of plants from annual color plants, herbs, perennials, succulents/cacti, native plants, trees and shrubs. Our sale is a major public event on Texas Heroes Square in downtown Gonzales. We look forward to seeing our public and not only selling them quality plants but answering their questions and concerns about gardening. Many of our customers come to the sale with specifics needs in mind and we are happy to make suggestions for plants in any area of their yards.
