Training Includes:
The Gonzales Master Gardener training program begins in September and continues through April each year. Classes meet approximately every other Tuesday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The cost of the class is $185 which includes the costs of textbook, all instructions, a soil sample test, entrance fees for class field trips and a state required background check.

Volunteer Commitment
Persons working for the state recognized title “Texas Master Gardener” must complete 50 hours of volunteer service on approved activities either during or within one year after completing their training. Master Gardeners work in their local communities to improve gardening and horticultural skills of local people and students. All Master Gardener volunteer work follows the research-based recommendations of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. The title “Texas Master Gardener” can be used by volunteers only when engaged in Texas A&M AgriLife Extension activities.
The type of service done by Master Gardeners varies according to the community needs and abilities and interests of the Master Gardener. Some provide public education on gardening and related topics while others help support horticultural projects.
Certification/Recertification
Participants become certified Texas Master Gardeners after they have completed the training course and fulfilled their volunteer commitment. Thereafter, to remain certified you must complete a minimum of six (6) hours continuing education and (20) hours of community volunteer work each calendar year.
